The Sunflower

Is it a newborn baby
Smiling in its dream?
Or is it the budding flower
of youth?
No,
It's the ancient Greek nymph
Clytie in love with the Sun

She loves him
So her heart turns toward him
from sunrise to sunset.

She loves him
So she looks up to him
till her hairs turn grey

Near or far
It's measured by the light
Faithful and true
It's witnessed by Heaven and the Earth.

Van Gogh's sunflower
Has a set value
But that of Clytie's
Is priceless

O
My Apollo
I love you so much
but as conceited as I am
I won't be able to say
Any words of love

And all my love
Has gone hidden
in Van Gogh's painting

My love
Is Clytie's love
And hers
The sunflower

Her poetry is simple yet rich—simple to invite readers to read, yet rich in feelings and images. A good example is the poem "A Hand Fan:" “One side is spring, the other autumn.” Another good one is "Your Leaves and My Water:" “Your leaves / Have fallen into my yard / My water / Has wetted your lawn.” These words draw readers in and explore new realm of experiences. Bing Hua also has a magic way to express love through different seasons. She puts just enough ingredients to make her lines “taste” and “smell” good. Mr. Xu did a very good job to catch the 100 poems’ essences and styles in his translation. I highly recommend this book especially in this season.
